SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball team dropped a 70-61 decision to Lone Star Conference opponent Cameron on Wednesday night in Lawton, Okla.
The Belles (6-5, 3-2 LSC) lost their first road game of the season and allowed the most points in regulation this season. ASU shot 42-percent (22-52) from the floor and hit 43-percent (7-16) from behind the three-point line. Cameron (3-8, 2-3 LSC) shot 45-percent (24-53) from the field and hit seven 3-pointers including five in the first half.
“We didn't execute well offensively and we had too many wasted offensive possessions,” head coach Sally Walling Brooks said after the game. “We will just keep working to get better.”
In the first half Cameron and ASU were tied at six a piece at the 15:51 mark before the Aggies hit a run. Over the next five minutes the Aggies outscored the Belles 15-2 to take a 21-8 advantage. Cameron extended its lead to as much as 17 before ASU cut it to 37-24 at the end of the half.
The Belles came out firing in the second half as
Leah LeMaire hit a pair of three pointers to cut the deficit to eight points at 40-32 with 16:28 remaining in the game. ASU kept trying to chip away at the Cameron lead but would not come closer than five points with the last time coming with 50 seconds to go at 62-57. The Aggies hit eight free throws over the last 50 seconds to put the game away.
Cameron scored 20 points off 11 Belle turnovers compared to just nine points on 11 Aggie turnovers for ASU.
LeMaire led Angelo State with 17 points with
Lauren Holt scoring 16 points.
Haylee Oliver earned her fifth-straight double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Oliver grabbed 13 defensive rebounds and added four assists on the night.
Cameron was led by 17 points from both Brittany Harris and Chelsea Stamp. Lacy Reinke chipped in 13 points as well.
The Belles will return home on Saturday to face Midwestern State at 5:30 p.m. in Stephens Arena at the Junell Center. The game will be carried on KKSA 1260AM with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
