ODESSA, Texas – Four Angelo State players scored in double figures as the Belles beat UT-Permian Basin 71-64 in Odessa for their third-straight victory.
The Belles (5-3) shot 54-percent from the field for the game including 56.7-percent in the first half. The Falcons (2-4) were held scoreless over the final 3:47 of the game. ASU scored 18 points off 19 UTPB turnovers and dominated scoring in the paint 36-24.
"Tonight was huge for us as a team," head coach
Cayla Petree said after the game. "We showed some toughness on the road in a great college basketball environment. We are getting better with every practice and every game. I am extremely proud of our girls."
Hillari Adam led all scorers with 17 points.
Amanda Weaver added 14 points and
Karli Kellermeier had 11 points.
Rochelle Norris scored 10 points and it marks the fourth-straight time the senior has scored in double digits.
The Belles started the game on a 6-0 run over the first four minutes of the half before UTPB closed it to 6-5 with a three pointer by Loya Giselle with 15:23 to go in the half. A three pointer by
Karli Kellermeier started an 11-3 ASU run that was capped off with a jumper by
Kayla Turner.
The Falcons would cut the Belle lead to three with 2:02 to play in the game.
Michelle Rosewell extended the lead to six with a three pointer and ASU would make it a 39-32 advantage at halftime. Â The 39 first half points is the most scored this season in the first half.
The second half was close throughout with both teams trading shots. A 9-0 run by UTPB would give the Falcons their first lead of the game at 57-52 at the 9:33 mark. A block by Weaver forced a UTPB turnover and Weaver made the Falcons pay.
The sophomore guard would hit a three pointer on back-to-back possessions to spark a 10-0 ASU run and a 62-57 advantage. UTPB would cut the lead to 63-62 before
Leah LeMaire hit a jumper and was fouled. LeMaire would put the Belles up 67-62 with the made free throw. Â The Belles defense held UTPB scoreless over the final 3:47 of the game to preserve the victory.
The Belles will continue its road trip on Wednesday with a game against Western New Mexico in Silver City, N.M.Â
