SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team shot 63-percent in the first half and connected on seven three pointers to cruise to a 70-49 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday at the Junell Center.
The Belles (9-5, 3-1 LSC) won their second-straight game by shooting 51.9-percent and limiting the Lions (2-11, 1-3 LSC) to 25-percent shooting. ASU forced 18 turnovers and received 33 points off the bench led by
Kayla Turner's career high 19 points.
ASU started hitting 10 of their first 11 shots on the way to hitting 64-percent of its shots from the field. Turner along with
Michelle Rosewell,
Leah LeMaire and Tati Haynes would combine for seven three pointers in the first half.
Leah LeMaire opened the game with a three pointer that would spark a 17-4 lead for the Belles with 14:24 to go in the first half.
Rochelle Norris, who scored 13 points in the first half, hit a jumper in the lane to spark another 17-4 run to put ASU up 34-8 with just over nine minutes to go. Â
The Lions would respond and outscore the Belles 15-8 over the last 9:17 of the first half to cut the deficit to 42-23 at halftime.
The Belles continued putting it to the Lions with a 10-5 run to open the second half to push the Belles to a 54-28 lead.
Haylee Oliver started it with a layup and it was capped off with back-to-back jumpers from Turner.
The Lions would outscore the Belles 21-16 over the final 13:06 to make the final score 70-49.
Turner's career high 19 points came on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor and 3-of-7 from behind the three point line. Norris scored a season high 16 points with 13 coming in the first half. The Belles eclipsed 70 points for the fourth time this season.
Breanna Harris led the Lions with 10 points.
The Belles will return to action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Stephens Arena against West Texas A&M.
