Belles Upset No. 25 Tarleton State

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team upset No. 25 Tarleton State 60-55 at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center on Wednesday night.

The Belles (12-9, 7-5 LSC) outrebounded the Texanns (16-6, 7-5 LSC) 40-29 and forced 16 Tarleton State turnovers. ASU limited the Lone Star Conference's leading scorer Kiara Wright to only 16 points and nine rebounds

Angelo State used a strong first half holding TSU to 36.0-percent shooting while hitting 40-percent from the field. A Haylee Oliver jumper to start the game sparked a 12-2 run over the first six minutes of the game where every Belle scored. The Texanns responded with a 9-3 run to cut the lead to 17-11 at the 9:41 mark.

A 3-pointer by Karli Kellermeier put the Belles up 24-15 with 7:36 to play. The junior finished the half with seven points and 10 rebounds. Tarleton State would outscore ASU 7-6 over the final 7:36 but the Belles held a 30-22 lead at the half.

The two teams started the second half scoring five points each before Amanda Weaver found her shot. The sophomore hit back-to-back threes and hit one more to put the Belles up 46-31 with 11:52 to go in the second half.

Tarleton State went on a 13-5 run to cut the Belles lead to 51-44 with under 3:57 to go. The Texanns found their shooting stroke. After only hitting one three in the first half TSU hit three in a span of 2:11 to give the Belles only a 56-53 lead with 1:17 to go in the game.

Oliver was able to hit four free throws over the final 1:17 to secure the 60-55 win.

Hillari Adam led the Belles with 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Kellermeier scored seven points and tied a career-high 14 rebounds.

The Belles limited the LSC's top scorer and rebounder to just 16 points and nine rebounds. Brianna Bledsoe added 13 and Shanae Lowrance scored 11.

The win snaps a four game TSU win streak in the season series and the Belles are now 11-0 on the season when leading at halftime.

The Belles return to the court on Saturday against Texas Woman's at 2 p.m. in Denton.
