Belles Face St. Edward's on the Road

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team will face St. Edward's in Austin on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m.

The Belles are 4-1 on the season for the first time since the 2010-11 season. ASU is scoring 85.6 points (No. 1 in the LSC) per game and is limiting opponents to 65.2 points per game. Angelo State has continued to distribute the ball with a 19.4 assist per game average and outrebounded teams by a margin of 44.0 to 35.4.

"I didn't even know how well our distribution was until I looked it and studied the number," ASU head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. You love that as a coach because it is so many weapons and so many people the opponent has to stop. It is a very pleasant surprise and one that makes you tough to guard."

Five different Belles have recorded at least 10 assists this season led by Brea Mitchell's 20. Four others are scoring in double figures in part due to the 97 assists.

"One of the things you want to do is find different ways to score within our offense," Baker said. "Once we get more games we will continually be able to figure that out."

Taylor Dorsey is leading the way with 16.4 points per game. She has scored in double figures in three game and all three have been at least 18 points. The Fort Worth native has grabbed 6.0 rebounds per game and added 16 assists and five steals. The junior leads the LSC in scoring and field goal percentage (.459). Dorsey is one of two with a double-double on the season with 27 points and 10 rebounds against Arlington Baptist.

Jasmine Prophet has quietly put up 11.4 points per game. The junior has back-to-back double figure games with a season high 18 coming against Arkansas Monticello. She is one of four in double figure assists with 10 and leads ASU with seven blocks on the season. She also is tops on the team in field goal percentage hitting 54.8-percent from the floor.

Brea Mitchell recorded her third game in double figures with 11 points against Texas Wesleyan. She is the team leader in rebounds with 6.4 per game and in assists with 20. She is one of two players on the team with a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener.

Christina Robinson is the final Belle in double figures with 10.0 points per game. She is tied with Dorsey with nine 3-pointers for the team lead. She has hit double figures in two games and scored a season high 16 against Missouri S&T. She has 10 assists and 11 steals on the year. The junior is perfect from the free throw line hitting 7-of-7 from the charity stripe.

Diamlaises Rivera has been a spark off the bench for ASU averaging 9.4 points per game. She has three games in double figures. The senior also is third on the team in rebounding with 5.0 per game. The native of Puerto Rico is second on the team with three blocks and has added five assists and four steals.

KeAnna Kelly has become a defensive force with a team high 11 steals on the season. The sophomore has two blocks and grabs 2.2 rebounds per game. She is sixth on the team in scoring with 8.2 per game and recorded a season high 16 points against Missouri S&T.

Lexi Murphy came off the bench to score a season high 11 points and six assists in Wednesday's win over Texas Wesleyan. It is her first game in double figures this season. She is averaging 6.5 points per game and has hit five 3-pointers on the year. The junior has nine assists on the season and grabbed 3.0 rebounds.

Others coming off the bench to contribute include Kiahna Thompson and Natalie Quesnel. Thompson added nine points versus TWU. The sophomore scored 4.4 points per game in just 9.8 minutes per game. Quesnel, a freshman, is scoring 4.2 points per game.

The Hilltoppers of St. Edward's are 2-5 on the season and averaging 60.7 points per game. Three Hilltoppers are in double figures in points led by Khiani Clark with 12.0 per game. Mileka Loydrake (11.5) and Bailey Hill (10.0) also have averaged double figure points. ASU holds a 12-8 series advantage with SEU including winning four of the last five.

"They are tough and really good when they play at home," Baker said. "They don't make a lot of mistakes and they are athletic. St. Edward's has an inside outside game. We are very similar and it will come down to who plays the best. "

The game will be carried locally on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
