SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team will take a three game conference winning streak into Lawton, Oklahoma for a game with Cameron at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20.
The Belles (10-4, 3-1 LSC) take the longest current win streak in the conference into Lawton. Cameron has won the last three matchups but ASU is 3-2 in the last five games in Lawton. It will be a matchup of the top two 3-point shooting teams in the league. Angelo State leads the LSC with 36.4-percent while Cameron is nearly identical with a 36.3-perecent 3-point field goal percentage. The Aggies make 8.7 per game compared to just 6.9 for the Belles.
"I'm really pleased with our play especially that last three games," Angelo State women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "We are playing better basketball. As long as we continue to play a higher level of basketball and improve I will be happy. We have a long way to go and more games."
The Belles lead the LSC in a few categories and are top 10 in some national categories. The top LSC marks including scoring offense (81.9), 3-point field goal percentage (.364), offensive rebounds (15.4), turnover margin (3.86), assist to turnover ratio (1.23) and assists (18.14). The 18.14 assists per game is No. 10 nationally while the 81.9 points per game is No. 6 in the nation.
ASU continues to force turnovers at a rate of 18.4 per game while in conference it has dropped slightly to 14.8 per game. The Belles have gone back to its turnover causing game averaging 17.6 in the last three. ASU has benefited scoring 23.5 points off turnovers in the last two games alone.
Cameron enters the matchup losing its last two games and an 8-6 overall record and 2-3 in the LSC. The Aggies score 67.9 points per game while allowing 66.4 points per game. Dayla Threatt and Brandi Leal lead the team in scoring at 12.9 points per game and 10.2 points per game, respectively. '
"Cameron is so good in transition and shooting the three," Baker said. "They are extremely dangerous because they are either making a layup or a 3-pointer every time. If they are on and things are rolling they can score a lot of points and do it quickly. When they do that they are one of the most dangerous teams in the conference. Â You are never really safe with a lead because they can come back quickly."
The Belles have been led in scoring this season by Taylor Dorsey's LSC leading 17.1 points per game but Brea Mitchell has shouldered the scoring load in the last three games for ASU. Mitchell has averaging 17.6 points per game in the last three games. She recorded her second double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds against TAMUC and followed it up with a game high 19 points in the upset over then No. 1 West Texas A&M. The senior added 13 points and eight rebounds in the road win over ENMU. She has eight games in double figure points and on a current streak of three games. Mitchell also contributes a team high 5.5 rebounds per game, 34 assists and 12 steals. She season scoring average of 11.7 is second on the team and hits a team high 52.0-percent from the field.
Dorsey has found other ways of contributing to go along with her scoring. She recorded her second double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 assists. Her 58 assists are No. 2 in the LSC and the junior is also No. 2 in assists to turnover ratio at 1.5 per game. The Fort Worth native leads the team in assists and steals (25). She has score double-digits in 10 games this year.
Jasmine Prophet is third on the team in scoring at 10.4 points per game. The junior is No. 2 in the LSC with 24 blocks on the year. She continues to be efficient at the free throw line making a LSC high 85.4-percent. She grabs 4.9 rebounds per game and dishes out 17 assists and has recorded 11 steals on the year.
KeAnna Kelly is fourth on the team in scoring at 8.9 points per game. The sophomore has scored in double figures in six games with two being in the last three games. She is second on the team with 16 steals and fourth with 32 assists.
Christina Robinson, who is second on the team in assists with 36, is averaging 6.7 points per game. She has hit 11-of-22 from the 3-point line and is tops on the team in 3-point field goal percentage (.500). She has scored in double figures in three games and handed out at least two assists in every game but one.
The bench played a huge role in ASU's win over Eastern New Mexico. The bench scoring has been led by Diamalises Riveara. The senior scored a game high 19 points in the win over ENMU. It was her fifth game of the season in double figures. She also has dished out nine assists and stole six passes to along with 4.4 rebounds per game. Lexi Murphy and Kiahna Thompson hit some pivotal threes during ENMU. Murphy averaged 5.5 points per game and has hit 15 three pointers on the season which is No. 3 on the team. Thompson has 10 three pointers this season along with 10 assists and six steals.
Natalie Quesnel and Nekeita Bailey have also provided depth off the bench. Quesnel scored 3.8 points per game while Bailey has handed out 16 assists and 10 steals.
