SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team returns home to host back-to-back games at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center against Midwestern State on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. and Texas Woman's on Sunday, Jan 24 at 2 p.m.
The Belles are 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the LSC after going 1-1 on their latest road trip. ASU is 7-1 at home this season and 2-0 in conference home games. "I thought we played well against Cameron," Angelo State women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "I wish we would have played better in the first half but I'm proud of the way we played in the second half. We have to have the right mentality going into these games. We have to ignore records and be ready to play."
ASU is scoring more at home by a total of 85.8 points per game and winning games by a 20.1 scoring margin. The Belles forced 15.3 turnovers per game at home compared to just 14.3 and steal 9.4 passes per game to just 8.5 during the season.
Midwestern State enters with a 4-12 overall record and 3-3 in the LSC. The Mustangs have won three of their last four games. MSU scored 53.2 points per game and give up 67.5 on the season. Whitney Taylor (9.2) and Jennifer Sissel (8.1) are the top two scoring options for the Mustangs.
"Midwestern State is really scrappy and they play hard," Baker said. "They can cause you problems because they get after. They have a solid ball screen offense and really try to get to the rim. They know who their best players are and try to get them the ball. They will press and put pressure on you."
Texas Woman's comes into Sunday's game with a 16-3 overall record and 6-1 in conference. TWU holds opponents to just 56.9 points per game and is scoring 66.1 points per game. Erin Maxwell and Kenesha Saygo are the team's leading scorers. Maxwell averages 12.4 points per game and Saygo chips in 10.1 per game.
"Sunday is going to be tough one because Texas Woman's is a good team and two because of the schedule," Baker said. "Back-to-back games are really tough on a team but we are excited to play in front of our home fans. Texas Woman's is extremely athletic and fast. They have a great inside out combination with speedy guards and arguably the best post player in the conference in Erin Maxwell. We need to keep them out of transition and the ball out of Maxwell's hands."
