SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State women's basketball team will continue its conference slate with a game against Texas Woman's at 6Â p.m. Saturday in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
The Belles are now 5-0 on the season and have won big in most of their games this season, out-scoring opponents by an average of 22.2 points per game, which ranks first in the Lone Star Conference.
Leading the scoring effort for the Belles is Taylor Dorsey and Lexi Murphy. The two are first and second on the team in scoring, with Dorsey averaging a conference and nation-leading 24.4 points per game and Murphy adding in 11 points per contest. The two don't just look to score themselves, however, as they are tied for the team lead in assists as well with 3.2 per game each and Murphy has taken care of the ball so well that she leads the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio. Murphy is also the Belles' top performer from behind the arc this season, hitting 43 percent of her shots from long range this year.
Also averaging double figures so far this year has been post Jasmine Prophet, who has 10.5 points per contest in the four games she has played. ASU has also receive a significant contribution from players off the bench with an average of 25 points per game from players who do not start. Chenelle Pelle has averaged 9.3 games coming in off the bench, and the Belles have also received significant contribution from point guard Madi Greenwood, who has put up 8.2 points per game.
"I've been really pleased with how our bench players have produced when we needed them to," ASU head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "As a coach you always wonder early in the season about how those players who don't start the game are going to contribute, and I think they've done a remarkable job so far this season."
Prophet is also the team's rebounding leader, grabbing an average of 7.3 per game, and Murphy and Pelle are both grabbing more than five boards a game as well. Overall, Angelo State has out-rebounded opponents by an average of 8.4 boards per game, which ranks first in the LSC.
Dorsey is also the team's leader on defense, grabbing 14 steals so far this year. Three other Belles, Bria Frierson, Keanna Kelly and Greenwood have all chipped in as well with seven steals each, and Christina Robinson has six as well. Eight different ASU players have also recorded blocks on the season, led by Jasmine Prophet with three.
The Pioneers will be coming into San Angelo off of 67-55 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville and holding a 5-2 overall record. TWU is led by Kenesha Saygo, who has averaged 15.3 points in the three games she has played, but the Pioneers also have the conference's top threat from behind the arc in Andrea Mapua.
"You've got to win your home games, especially within the conference," Baker said. "I always tell the team that there is no one game more important than the other, but there is something to be said about performing well on your own court, so I hope that is something we can do."
