SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team will be on the road against Midwestern State on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. in Wichita Falls and versus Texas Woman's on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. in Denton in back-to-back days.
The Belles are 17-6 overall and with a win it will be just the third time in the last 11 seasons that Angelo State has won at least 18 games in a season. ASU is at No. 2 in the LSC standing with a 10-3 record. Angelo State has a 4-3 road record and has won their last two road games.
"We have to be ready to approach the rest of the season on the road," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "We have three conference games left and LSC tournament games and hopefully NCAA tournament games and all will be on the road. Defensively, we are playing more to a strategy and buying into the game plan. The defensive system is better and we have a better idea of what teams do the second time."
ASU continues to the lead the LSC in scoring (80.3 points per game), offensive rebounds (14.7) and assist to turnover ratio (1.21). The Belles are also No. 2 in scoring margin (10.0), field goal percentage (44.0-percent), 3-point field goal made (6.5), free throw percentage (71.3-percent), rebounding offense (42.5) and assists (17.09).
Midwestern State is 5-19 on the season and 4-10 in the LSC. The Mustangs are coming off a win over Texas A&M-Kingsville and lost to ASU in San Angelo 86-68. Whitney Taylor leads MSU by scoring 12.0 points per game.
TWU is 19-7 on the season and 9-5 in the LSC. The Pioneers are also coming off a win over Texas A&M-Kingsville. ASU won an 81-78 game in San Angelo in the first meeting. Erin Maxwell and Kenesha Saygo lead the team in points with 11.6 and 10.9, respectively.
"Both teams are better especially at home," Baker said. "I really think both games are going to be very competitive and we are going to have to play well to win."
The Belles are led by Taylor Dorsey in scoring at 16.2 points per game and 6.4 rebounds per game. She is the only player in the LSC in the top five in both scoring and rebound average. The junior has scored in double figures 17 times this season and grabbed double-digit rebounds four times. She also leads ASU in assists (89) and steals (36). The Fort Worth native scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the first game with Midwestern State and added 14 points in the first matchup with TWU.
Jasmine Prophet is averaging 13.0 points per game which is No. 4 in the LSC but leads the team in conference games at 14.8 points per game. She has 15 games in double figures and 10 have been versus conference opponents. She records 5.5 rebounds per game and leads the team with 37 blocks. The 37 blocks are the eighth most in a single season in ASU history. Â Prophet led ASU with 23 points and seven rebounds in the win over TWU and 19 in the win over Midwestern State.
Brea Mitchell recorded her 14th game in double figures with a team-high 19 points against Cameron. The senior is scoring 12.1 points per game with 64 assists, seven blocks and 23 steals. She makes 49.1-percent from the field and 35.5-percent from the 3-point line. She is second on the team with a .844 free throw percentage. Â The Plano native scored 14 points against both Midwestern State and TWU.
KeAnna Kelly is fourth on the team in scoring at 9.0 points per game. She has made a team high 34 three pointers along with dishing out 48 assists. The sophomore has recorded 23 steals on the year.
Christina Robinson rounds out the starting five by scoring 6.8 points per game. She is tied for the team lead with 36 steals and has dished out 57 assists.
Diamalises Rivera, Lexi Murphy, Kiahna Thompson, Natalie Quesnel and Nekeita Bailey have provided depth off the bench for ASU. Rivera scored 7.1 points per game with 3.1 rebounds. Murphy scores 4.8 points per game and has the best free throw percentage on the team at .850. Thompson leads the team in 3-point percentage making 42.9-percent. The sophomore has made 20 three pointers and scores 4.7 points per game. She is also coming off a career high 12 points in the win over Cameron. Quesnel averages 3.4 points per game with 2.1 assists while Bailey has handed out 20 assists and recorded 11 steals on the season.
