SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team scored 24 points off 26 West Texas A&M turnovers to upset the undefeated No. 2 Lady Buffs 68-51 on Thursday night at Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
The Belles (9-4, 4-3) LSC) beat the Lady Buffs (14-1, 6-1 LSC) in San Angelo for the third straight year and won for the the sixth time in their last eight matchups. ASU dominated in the paint outscoring WT 32-18 while also adding 16 second chance points. The Belles limited WT to 36.5 percent from the floor including just 25 percent in the deciding fourth quarter. The game featured four lead changes and two ties.
Four players scored in double figures led by 15 points from De'Anira Moore and Keanna Kelly. Marquita Daniels added 14 points, four steals and two assists while Dezirae Hampton chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds.
The two teams struggled in the first half and were knotted at 22. The Belles built a five point lead in part to back-to-back 3-pointers from Kelly. Every time WT would answer with buckets and with 3:06 left in the third quarter it was tied at 36. ASU ended the quarter on a 6-2 run for a 42-38 lead after three quarters.
The fourth quarter started with a 7-0 run for ASU capped off by Kelly's third 3-pointer of the game. She scored five of the seven points to give ASU a nine point advantage. WT responded with a 3-pointer but Hampton's three pointer with 4:28 allowed the Belles the chance to pull away. Over the final 2:46 of the game, Angelo State outscored West Texas A&M 14-3 to secure the 68-51 victory. Nine of the 14 points were made by Daniels.
The Belles struggled offensively in the first half hitting only 24.2 percent from the field. ASU's defense forced the Lady Buffs into 18 first half turnovers. West Texas A&M took an early 4-2 advantage with 7:23 left in the first quarter. ASU would go on a 9-0 run to take the lead at 11-4. Ekiya Gray, who scored nine points, hit a 3-pointer and a jumper. WT responded with seven straight points to tie the game at the end of the first.
West Texas A&M started the second by building its largest lead of the game. Tied at 13, the Lady Buffs hit a three pointer at the 7:50 mark. Moore hit a jumper to cut the deficit to one and sparked a 9-0 run over the next three minutes. Moore scored five of the nine points to put ASU up 22-16. The Belles would not score again over the final 4:20 as WT came back to tie the game going into the half.
The Belles will host UTPB on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
