Late First-Half Run Leads Belles to Win Over TWU

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State women's basketball team turned a late first-half run into a win Saturday afternoon, defeating Texas Woman's 73-64 in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.

The Belles (14-4, 9-3 LSC) had four different players finish in double figures in the matchup including Dezirae Hampton, Marquita Daniels, Ekiya Gray and De'Anira Moore.

TWU got on the board first in the contest and kept the game close throughout the opening quarter. ASU got up by as many as four early on a three-pointer from Ekiya Gray, but the Pioneers quickly closed the gap and tied the game at 8-8 with 5:41 left in the first period.

The Belles never led by more than four in the first quarter, and when the horn sounded they led 17-14.

In the second quarter, Texas Woman's started kept their intensity up to start, hitting back-to-back three-pointers at the start to take a 20-19 lead. They then increased their lead to its largest point with another bucket just a minute later, forcing a timeout from ASU.

Following the timeout with 6:38 left in the half, the Belles increased their defensive pressure, collecting five steals before the half ended and going on a 14-5 run overall. Heading into the locker room, ASU held a 12-point lead, which was their largest of the first half.

Ekiya Gray started the second half with another bucket to start the second half and keep the ASU run going, but TWU responded with back-to-back buckets of its own to halt the Belle momentum.

Gray finished in double figures for the fourth straight game after scoring 11 against the Pioneers was just one rebound short of a double-double with nine boards in the game.

Angelo State continued to answer Texas Woman's offensively in the quarter, getting timely three-pointers from Dezirae Hampton and Madi Greenwood that kept the lead at 10 points with 4:18 to play.

Hampton finished the game with her third straight double-digit scoring performance, getting 15 points and pulling down eight rebounds as well.

From the 4:18 mark on, ASU rattled off another run, scoring nine straight points with a jumper from Marquita Daniels to cap it off. The run gave Angelo State a 19-point lead, which would be their largest of the game.

Daniels had a strong game both offensively and defensively in the game, racking up 14 points, seven assists and six steals.

TWU closed the quarter with the next seven points, giving the Belles a 12-point lead heading into the final period.

The Pioneers got a jumper to open the fourth quarter and reduced the gap to just 10 points, but Angelo State responded with the next four points to rebuild their lead.

Neither team was able to put together much of a run the rest of the way, trading buckets as ASU maintained a double-digit lead for most of the final six minutes.

With 1:39 left, TWU cut the deficit to just nine points which it what it was when the game ended with ASU winning 73-64.

The Belles will be on the road next, taking on Cameron at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in Lawton, Oklahoma.
