SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team, ranked 24th in the preseason poll, will begin the regular season this weekend as they travel to Denton to compete in the Texas Woman's University Tournament. The Belles will face Oklahoma Christian on Saturday and the University of West Alabama on Sunday.
Senior guard Marquita Daniels, junior forward De'Anira Moore, senior guard Dezirae Hampton, returner Dearria Watson, and a host of transfers and newcomers will lead the Belles. Daniels was named the Lone Star Conference preseason player of the year, Moore was last season's defensive player of the year, and Hampton was an all-conference performer.
Although the Belles do start their regular season this weekend, they have played once already, defeating Sul Ross State 99-62 in an exhibition last week. Marquita Daniels led the team with 22 points, seven rebounds, six steals, and five assists. Newcomer Maria Delgado scored 20 points and hit three three pointers in her debut as a Belle. De'Anira Moore had a double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Dezirae Hampton and newcomer Catara Samuel joined her in double digits with 11 points each.
Oklahoma Christian has already played three games this season and has a 2-1 record. The Eagles defeated Lone Star Conference opponents Midwestern State and Cameron before falling to Central Oklahoma on Thursday.
West Alabama comes into the weekend with a 1-2 record. The Tigers fell to Eckerd College and Embry-Riddle before defeating Fort Valley State on Tuesday.
