SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team will enter the Lone Star Conference Tournament with the No. 1 seed after winning its second consecutive LSC title and face No. 8 Texas Woman's on Thursday, March 1 at 8:30 p.m. at Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas.
The Belles are 21-5 overall and have won 13 of their last 14 games. ASU took both conference games with TWU and with a win would advance to play the winner of Eastern New Mexico and Tarleton State on Saturday, March 3 at 2:30 p.m. Angelo State has made eight tournament finals and gone 5-3 in the final. The last tournament championship came in 2016. The Belles have advanced to the final in the last two seasons. ASU head coach Renae Shippy is one of four coaches to win at least 20 games in their first season and she is one of two coaches to guide ASU to a conference championship in their first season. Kevin Baker guided the Belles to a LSC Tournament Championship in 2015-16.
ASU has four players averaging double figures and two more right at 9.1 points per game. Three are also recording at least 7.3 rebounds per game.
Marquita Daniels is tops on the team with a 14.9 scoring average and 93 steals, which is No. 3 in steals per game at 3.72. She has scored double figures in 21 games including the last nine. The Atlanta native has also surpasses 20 points in six games. The senior also leads the team in assists with 86 and second on the team with 34 3-pointers. The 93 steals is currently No. 2 in the ASU single season list and she is now just three away from setting a new record.
De'Anira Moore is scoring 12.0 points per game and grabbing a team-high 9.5 rebound per game. The sophomore has 10 double-doubles on the year and recorded double-digits scoring in 17 games and rebounds in 12. She leads the team with 84 blocks and sits at No. 3 on single season list and is only five away moving into No. 2.
Dezirae Hampton scores 11.9 points per game with 7.3 rebounds per game. The junior has four double-doubles on the season including one in the last game of the regular season against WNMU with 19 points and 12 rebounds. She has hit 31 3-pointers including a go-ahead 3-pointer in a win over Eastern New Mexico.
Ekiya Gray has in double figures in 10 games while playing in 17 on the season. She scored 10.2 points per game and grabs 8.4 rebounds per game. She has recorded three double-doubles on the year. The Houston native has 11 blocks, 30 assists and 27 steals. She is one of two Belles with double-digit assists, steals and blocks along with Moore.
Keanna Kelly leads ASU with 42 3-pointesr on the season. She is scoring 9.1 points per game to go along with 52 assists and 24 steals.
Madi Greenwood also scores 9.1 points per game with 31 3-pointers on the year. The Kansas native has recorded 61 assists, nine blocks and 18 steals on the year. She also has started 24 of 26 games this season.
Mikayla Blount, Kynese Davis, Dearria Watson and Aaliyah Watson have provided depth off the bench all season. Blount and Davis have each played in 26 games this year. Blount has scored 4.0 points per game and sank 21 3-pointers on the year. Davis averages 3.7 points per game and is third on the team with 53 assists on the year. Watson has played in 11 games scored 17 total points while Warren has scored 28 total points in 21 games this year.
