SAN ANGELO – Coming off a big week for the Angelo State women's basketball team that saw them win a pair of games to extend their home winning streak to six games. The Rambelles enter their busiest week of the season to this point, with three games on the slate.
The Rambelles will host UT Permian Basin on Tuesday (5:30 p.m. tip-off) before a pair of road games on Thursday (6:30 p.m. CST tip-off) and Saturday (2 p.m. tip-off) against Western New Mexico and West Texas A&M, respectively.
The win for the Rambelles this past Thursday against the Lady Chaps was their first win over a ranked opponent since January 2018; it is also their first win over LCU since December 2000.
All five of the Rambelle starters average more than nine points per game – Wayland Baptist transfers
Blakely Gerber (11.2 PPG),
Payton Brown (10.8) and
Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant (10.0) average double-digits in scoring for the season, while returners
Sawyer Lloyd (9.5 PPG) and
Madeline Stephens (9.4 PPG) aren't too far behind their teammates.
Brown is coming off perhaps her best week this season – the Lubbock native recorded a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, becoming the first player to record a double-double against the defending national champions in conference play this season; against Eastern New Mexico, she shot 7-of-14 from the field and 3-of-6 from three en route to a season-high 20 points.
Additionally,
Ashlynn Sharp and
Samantha Rocha have provided much-needed depth off the bench. Sharp was perfect in five shots against the Greyhounds, making all three of her attempts from behind the arc to score a season-high 13 points. Rocha, who provided quality defense against a Greyhound squad that threw three post players over 6'2" at the Rambelles, was also an offensive spark against LCU, scoring 11 points in 15 minutes of action.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
UT Permian Basin is 4-15 overall on the season and 0-7 in conference play. Four of their conference losses have been by less than ten points; on the road this season, they are winless in eight games.
The Falcons, who average 59.7 points per game, are led by guard Alexus Wykoff. The senior averages 13.5 points per game on 61.5 percent shooting from the field.
The Rambelles have won their last eight contests against the Falcons, with four of those wins coming inside the Junell Center.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
Western New Mexico is 4-10 on the season and 0-6 in conference play. All four of their wins this season have come on their home court.
The Mustangs block 4.57 shots per game, second-best mark in the LSC. Zyan Smith leads the Mustangs' offense with 9.8 points per game; she is also the only player to start all 14 games for the Mustangs this season.
The Rambelles have won the last nine matchups between them and the Mustangs dating back to 2015, with four of those wins coming in Silver City.
SCOUTING THE LADY BUFFS
West Texas A&M is 12-9 overall on the season and 5-2 in conference play; their wins this season include beating #16 Southwestern Oklahoma and #2 Texas A&M-Commerce.
This game is a make-up from January 20
th, which was postponed at the time due to health and safety protocols.
The Lady Buffs average 67.5 points per game, led by Zamorye Robert's 13.0 points per game.
The Rambelles are 8-27 against the Lady Buffs dating back to 2007; they have only won two games in Canyon in that time (2016 and 2019) in 15 attempts, with the win in 2016 representing the last Rambelles win over a ranked opponent before their win last Thursday over Lubbock Christian.
After this stretch of games for the Rambelles, they will jump into another stretch of three games in five days, facing Texas A&M Kingsville, Texas A&M International and St. Mary's on February 10
th, 12
