Rambelles Tip Off Season at the WCU Conference Challenge

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Following a fourth-place finish in the Lone Star Conference last season, the Angelo State women's basketball team looks for a fast start this season, the second under Head Coach Alesha Ellis as they take on MSU Denver and Western Colorado in Gunnison, Colo. at the WCU Conference Challenge.

NEED TO KNOW
  • The Rambelles started last season with eight straight losses, including their first two games against MSU Denver and Western Colorado.
  • The Blue and Gold return nine members from last year's squad and added have added eight freshmen to the fold.
  • Each of last years five starters and top five point scorers return for the Rambelles.
  • Sawyer Lloyd was named to the LSC Preseason Players to Watch list coming off her first All-LSC First Team selection last season where she averaged 11.6 points per contest.
  • Leading rebounders Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant and Madeline Stephens are back for the Rambelles along with the facilitator of the offense, Payton Brown.
  • Rambelles leading scorer Blakely Gerber also returns to the court for the Rambelles this season.
  • A couple of freshmen are expected to pick up some minutes for the Rambelles this season, Landry Morrow and Keniah Williams are a few names to look out for.
  • ASU was picked to finish fourth in the LSC preseason poll, West Texas A&M, Lubbock Christian, and Texas Woman's were the top three.
 
ANGELO STATE vs MSU DENVER
  • MSU Denver finished sixth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) last season after posing a 22-9 overall record, going 15-7 in conference play.
  • The Roadrunners won the RMAC tournament last season, securing themselves a bid into the South Central Regional.
  • The Roadrunners were bounced in the first round after losing in OT to Texas Woman's, 90-83.
  • In the recent RMAC preseason poll, the Roadrunners were picked to finish fourth in the conference, they received two first place votes as well.
  • Last season, MSU Denver scored 69.6 points per game while holding opponents to 63.0.
  • The Roadrunners lost their top three point scorers from last season and will turn to Kendra Parra who averaged 8.5 points per game (most among returners) amongst others for scoring.
  • MSU Denver leads the all-time series between the squads 3-1 and have won the last three in a row over the Rambelles.
 
ANGELO STATE vs WESTERN COLORADO
  • The Mountaineers serve as the host to the early season conference challenge this season after going 11-15 last season, 9-12 in conference play to finish ninth.
  • WCU was tabbed to finish 11th out of 15 teams in the RMAC preseason poll after losing in the first round of the conference tournament last year.
  • The Mountaineers scored 57.9 points per game last year and allowed 63.0, a -5.1 margin to finish the season.
  • WCU also lost its top three scorers from last season and will rely on fifth year senior Emmery Wagstaff for points. She averaged 9.3 points per game last season, shooting 33.6 percent from beyond the arc.
  • The Mountaineers were victorious in the team's only meeting, which was last season, winning in Denton, 62-57.
