Matthews spent nearly 20 years on the sidelines for ASU as an athletic trainer. Matthews was the first full time athletic trainer for ASU and spent his entire career as the head athletic trainer with only the help of student trainers. Through his student athletic training licensing program, Matthews graduated and placed hundreds of full-time licensed athletic trainer into the profession. Matthews was athletic trainer for many individual and team champions during his tenure including the 1978 NAIA Football Championship team as well as countless All-Americans and All-Conference student-athletes. He worked for the Houston Oilers as an athletic trainer from 1978-1987 and served as President of the southwest Athletic Trainers Association (SWATA) while at ASU. Mattews was elected to the SWATA Hall of Fame in 2003. After retiring from ASU as head athletic trainer, Matthews still serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of Kinesiology and is active in several state and national athletic training organizations.
